”Heere God wij komen tot U” wordt ”O Lord God, we come before Thee” in de vertaling van Marina. De inwoner van het dorpje Agassiz in het zuidwesten van Canada emigreerde rond haar twintigste naar dat land. Ze vond het jammer dat ze het Nederlandse coronalied niet kon delen met de mensen uit haar gemeenschap. Dus pakte ze pen en papier en begon, na toestemming van William, met het vertaalproject.

Het werd een flinke klus voor de juf en gehandicaptenwerker. „Een lied vertalen is nog iets anders dan een brief”, zegt ze. „Een lied moet rijmen en kloppen met de melodie. Woord voor woord vertalen gaat dus niet.” Hoewel ze recht wilde doen aan het lied van William, moest ze soms vertaalkeuzes maken. Ze is in het laatste vers het woord lied ingewisseld voor plea, wat zoiets als pleidooi betekent.

Marina zette het lied op Facebook en in haar WhatsAppstatus. „Meteen kreeg ik veel vragen naar de pdf-versie van het lied, want mensen en wilden het printen. Ze vertelden me: ik wil dit lied aan mijn kinderen leren, zodat ze altijd onthouden waar we in deze tijd doorheen zijn gegaan.”

De coronasituatie in Canada is vergelijkbaar met die in Nederland, stelt Marina. „Ook Canadezen hamsteren toiletpapier. Het virus is al opgedoken in de provincie waar ik woon. Maar voor zover ik weet is corona vooralsnog de reformatorische kerken hier voorbij gegaan.”
