Attendants push for internet filters on airplanes

MEMPHIS - Flight attendants are responding to a few airlines’ plans to equip some commercial aircraft with Internet service.

American Airlines is one of several airlines that plan to implement the service, but there are concerns over the ability of passengers to access pornography or violent movies.

Frank Bastien, a spokesman for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), says one major concern is turning flight attendants into an onboard police force.

If a passenger was viewing something that...another passenger found objectionable -- whether it be pornographic or whether it be excessively violent -- [it puts attendants in] the position of having to come between passengers who are angry with each other or [determining] how they would deal with someone who was complaining about something they could see some other passenger was viewing, Bastien explains.
