Bush receives differing reaction from conservatives

WASHINGTON - President Bush is receiving mixed reviews of his State of the Union address from national pro-family groups.

Jan LaRue of Concerned Women for America says the president „used great grace and class” when he introduced Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. LaRue says Bush was following the advice of political advisors to cater to the opposition by starting out with issues they typically talk about - like education, the environment, and healthcare.

She also praises the president for addressing the issue of judicial nominations, although he only spent 30 seconds on the subject. „The fact that you could see the smiling faces of Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito there in the front row, wearing black, smiling, reminds the American people of how hard the battle was to confirm these two great men to the Supreme Court - and that we need judges who have the proper judicial philosophy.”

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins says the president „failed” to call on the new Democratic majority to address the „core family and cultural issues” that many Democrats campaigned upon last fall. He says while all of the issues Bush mentioned „have significance in and of themselves, when we talk about the future of our children, their future is not dependent upon a strong economy.”

Perkins says their future is dependent on strong families. In addition, he says the president needs to tell the new Democratic leadership he will be fighting on behalf of those families. (AgapePress)
