Dozens hurt when 3 school buses crash

PITTSBURGH - Last Tuesday morning, three school buses carrying students on a field trip near Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, USA) were caught in a chain-reaction crash on a rainy highway, injuring dozens of children and adults, school and police officials said.

Audiostream:

There were no reports of serious injuries, school officials said. Doctors and hospital officials reported mostly whiplash-type injuries and minor cuts or abrasions. Forty-two people were taken to three hospitals, said state police Trooper Robin Mungo.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the chain-reaction crash on Interstate 279, though it was raining heavily at the time.

An official with the Midland Borough School District in Beaver County said all the students were in grades four to eight and attended the Midland Elementary Middle School about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. They were headed to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh when the buses crashed shortly after 9 a.m.

Superintendent Nick Trombetta said, under school policy, any student or adult who complained of an injury was taken to a hospital. (AP)
